Some are offered by educational institutions, while others are produced by experts in their field. The most important thing for an online course is for it to be engaging and to deliver a clear outcome.

In this article, I’ll explain exactly what an online course is. As well as what makes a great online course, and some examples of different online courses.

Online courses are typically a mix of video recordings or live lectures supplemented with readings and assessments that students can complete on their own time.

Online study – The method of study typically associated with online courses and programmes relies on a higher level of interaction than distance study, with a teaching style which is a bit similar to a traditional classroom setting – but without the actual classroom! Online study is facilitated by offering the student a range of resources that serve to assist them throughout their learning journey.

According to the dictionary, a course is a series of lectures or lessons about a particular subject, leading to an examination or qualification. The term became popular in the 1800s and comes originally from the Latin word cursus, which contains the idea of something that runs, or flows. Which is very related to how a course works: there’s a curriculum, or study plan you must follow in order to complete the training.

An online class is a course conducted over the Internet. They are generally conducted through a learning management system, in which students can view their course syllabus and academic progress, as well as communicate with fellow students and their course instructor.

Online classes are generally self-paced, allowing for greater flexibility in completing coursework

Online courses are revolutionizing formal education, and have opened a new genre of outreach on cultural and scientific topics. These courses deliver a series of lessons to a web browser or mobile device, to be conveniently accessed anytime, anyplace.

Secure Online Shops in South Africa

1 | Carefully Look at the Address Bar and URL

Be sure that the site is secured by looking at the address bar (URL) to see if there is an “s” in the URL, which should look like this “https://” to start with or has a lock symbol in the address bar. This does not guarantee against a scam site, but it shows that the site owner is using secured encryption processes to transfer data and protect itself from hackers.

2 | Check the Contact Page

Review the options for contacting the company. If you don’t see multiple options (phone, email, live chat, or physical address) then proceed with caution.

3 | Review the Company’s Social Media Presence

Most legitimate companies have some social media presence and activity. If you see the social media icons on their website, see if they actually link to a social media channel, and review the company reviews and see if you can find real employees of the company on LinkedIn.

4 | Double Check the Domain Name

Scammers will tend to create “similar” domain names to trick the user into thinking they are on a legit site, like Yah00.com or Amaz0b.net, making subtle changes that you may not even notice. Always double check the address bar to see if you have been redirected to a website that is not legitimate.

5 | Look Up the Domain Age

It is easy to look up the age of a website domain. Verifying the age of a site helps provide you with confidence that it has been in business for an established amount of time. Scam and fake sites usually have a short lifespan as they are rooted out early and shut down by legitimate business site owners.

Use the Whois Lookup domain tracker (https://whois.domaintools.com/) to get information such as who is the domain name registered to, where they are, and how long the website has been active.

6 | Watch for Poor Grammar and Spelling

Legitimate company websites will take great care in having a professional looking site. An excess of spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors could mean the website went up quickly. Occasional typos on a website can happen, but excessive errors could mean you are not on a legitimate site.

7 | Verify the Website Privacy Policy

Data privacy laws and regulations require most websites to provide website visitors with policies and procedures on how their data is collected, used, protected, and stored. Most sites provide a web page or link to a document providing detailed information. Look for this information and read it carefully before providing any information or making any online purchases.

8 | Run a Virus Scan

An occasional ad or pop-up can occur on some websites, but excessive ad content that interferes with your review of the site or pushes you to click on links to be redirected to other websites could indicate a scam or unsecured site.

There are several free resources to scan for viruses, phishing, malware, and known scam sites:

9 | Validate the Site with Google Safe Browser Transparency Report

The Google Safe Browsing Transparency Report allows you to paste a URL into a field, and it gives you a report on whether you can trust that website.

10 | Walk Away If It’s Too Good to be True

Though it is a common practice for some retailers to provide large price discounts on items to move inventory or promote a new product or service, if you find a site that offers an unbelievable deal, then think twice before continuing. If it’s too good to be true, then it probably isn’t legit.

11 | Do Your Research

A simple online search for the company’s reviews will tell you a lot about the business. See how recent the reviews are and if you see proactive responses from the company (where available.)

Online Mall Store

You may already dedicate some of your business budget to reaching new customers, such as placing ads in local papers or buying spots on the radio or television in your market. One advantage to an online store is that you can reach more customers than would ever be able to simply walk through your doors. An online shop removes the blockades of travel, parking and getting lost en route that can drive some customers away. While you can certainly continue to market to your local client base, online you have the option to catering to fans of your product or service that are miles — or even continents — away. Online shops’ boundaries are only items such as shipping rates, overseas taxes and the wait a customer may have until his order reaches his door. You may even find your product popular in a place you never would have had bricks-and-mortar access to.

  • Top 6 reasons given by shoppers in buying through internet
  • Saves time and efforts.
  • Convenience of Shopping at home.
  • Wide variety / range of products are available.
  • Good discounts / lower prices.
  • Get detailed information of the product.
  • We can compare various models / brands.

Almost anything can be a store these days, from someone’s garage to a kiosk in a mall to a massive warehouse. But each one of those places comes with associated costs such as rent, insurance, security and decor. Online stores may have their own associated costs, such as your Web hosting and domain fees, graphic design and whether you employ people to do your photographs, or copy and design work, but you’re able to spread out as far and wide as your servers allow. You don’t feel constrained, for example, of having to mix your winter and summer specials together in one corner of a shop; instead, create a separate — or several — Web pages for each. Customers won’t need maps, elevators or moving walkways to explore your store. They can click through its spaciousness with their keyboards and mice.

1. Convenience

For many customers, one of the benefits of online shopping is convenience. Although some people would consider stopping by a local store easier than ordering something online and getting it shipped, there are a few advantages of online shopping that are simply more convenient.

Shop From the Comfort of Your Home

For one, it doesn’t require you to actually go to the store. Just to physically go to a store, you need a way to get there, and for most people, this is driving. Not only do you waste gas driving to the store, but it takes precious time out of your day. Compare that to the convenience of online shopping, which on many major sites has become a one-click affair. Payment details, such as credit card information, can be securely stored for an easy shopping experience.

There’s no need to drive to the store to pick up some shampoo or dog food. Just choose the product online, click once, and voila, it’s on its way. This brings us to another convenient aspect of buying online: speed.

Speed

This is one area that traditional retail has seemed to have a leg up over online retail in the past. It used to be that shopping in stores would give instant gratification because you get to hold your purchase in your hand the minute you buy it. But this advantage is slowly being negated by the expanding field of eCommerce order fulfillment.

A few years ago, it wasn’t unusual to wait for a week to get your product delivered, which was too long for many consumers. Today, however, an online retailer with a high-quality and streamlined order fulfillment process can usually get your product to you within 1-2 business days. Sometimes, you can even get same-day delivery, which is a huge benefit of online shopping.

Fast and affordable online shipping options have eroded many people’s aversion to online shopping. In fact, fast shipping (sometimes even free same-day shipping) is one of the main reasons why more and more people are choosing to shop online.

2. Price

Is buying something online cheaper than buying it in the store? In many cases, it is! Some online shopping carts and platforms will offer yearly subscription services that offer discounts and free shipping for every item bought. Even when this is not the case, online buyers can save money because they have the ability to easily compare prices for the best possible deal.

When your competition is only a click away, there is a huge incentive to offer the lowest possible prices. Price has always been a critical component of ensuring sales, and the ease of price comparisons on the web, is an important benefit to online shopping.

Another price advantage of online shopping is that, depending on the state, many online stores do not charge sales tax, giving a huge competitive advantage to online retailers. But what about shipping prices? Many stores will offer free shipping if you purchase a certain amount.

3. Variety

Can’t find that specific electronic part or special edition toy in your local Walmart? No problem, because it’s very possible you’ll find it online. One of the benefits of online shopping is that specialty items, hard-to-find products, and almost everything under the sun is sold on the internet.

This is because online retailers do not have to hold inventory in every location, as they do in brick-and-mortar stores. Inventory is centrally located close to customers in fulfillment warehouses that can easily ship to online shoppers anywhere. The internet also makes it easier for specialty sellers because they don’t have to maintain a physical storefront to sell their products.

Lastly, international eCommerce is a big factor online. People selling on the internet are not competing with neighborhood stores, they are competing with everyone else selling similar products, whatever country they may be from. The ability to get your order shipped overseas is incredibly common these days and gives you more choice when shopping online.

Why Choose to Sell Online?

In short, there are major advantages of online shopping and good reasons to shop online. Online retail provides significant and obvious benefits over physical stores, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that large companies are seeing huge increases in online sales. Will there always be people who think 2-day delivery is too slow? Yes, and there will always be people who enjoy traditional shopping in stores and browsing as well.

Although some still believe the disadvantages of online shopping outweigh the benefits, the shift to online retail is not something that can or should be ignored, nor should the advantages of selling products online. If you’re looking to improve your order fulfillment process, it may be time to work with an experienced 3PL.

Rakuten Super Logistics offers convenient, reliable, and accurate 3PL fulfillment services, including subscription box fulfillment and return management, so your orders are packed, shipped, and delivered to your customers on time, every time. Request a quote today to see how we can help with lower shipping costs, faster delivery options, and a better shopping experience for your customers.

How To Spot a Fake Online Store in 6 Easy Steps

1. Source code

When you go to a website, right click on it and view the source code. Most professional and trustworthy sites are built by webdesigners from scratch, so if you see there a sentence that looks more or less like this “Created with HTML Generator Plus”, it might be a sign that something’s fishy.

2. SSL

If a site asks for sensitive data (credit card details, home address etc.), make sure it’s encrypted with SSL. The easiest way to know if it is is by checking the URL – SSL protected sites start with https://

3. Detailed information

You can be alarmed if you can’t find any information on who the seller is, how to reach them, what kind of services they provide (if they offer tanning beds, angle grinders and fertilizer at the same time, you can expect that something’s off), the shop’s terms of service or privacy policy. It’s the same situation with the offered product/service – the more details and photos, the bigger chance it’s a reliable shop.

4.Safe payments

Look for payment companies logo (e.g. Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Maestro). Shops that process online payments have gone through a scrupulous check up by financial institutions, so if they trust them, co can you!

5. Whois

Whois is a great tool for looking up historical information of any website – IP address, name server, registrar and screenshot history.

6. Alexa

Alexa lets you see a site’s popularity, other sites that link to it, queries that drive traffic to it and details about who visits the site (age, education, gender).

7. Page rank

PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. When one page links to another page, it is casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page and the higher PR number, the more important the page is.

8. Blacklist

Fraud or spam websites can be blacklisted to warn others of a suspicious sites. If a site shows up once on a blacklist, it might be an error, but if it’s labeled as spam by majority of servers, then you can be pretty sure it is in fact one.

9. Webarchive

A company claims it’s been in the e-business for 10 years? Webarchive lets you check what the site looked like years ago and if the merchant is telling the truth.

10. Internet opinions

Not 100% trustworthy as merchants can write fake reviews, but googling for opinions is always a good idea. Some tools like Web of Trust even rate sites by their trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy and child safety. Now that millions of people use Facebook and Twitter, social media platforms are also a great source for others’ opinions. Some shops like to show off their ‘Verified Merchant’ badge given to them by their business partners to ensure the clients that they can be trusted.

If you are suspicious of a site, before finalising your purchase make sure to at least check a few of the steps described above – it might save you time, money and energy. Do you have any other tips? Let us know in the comments!

Online education has grown popular over the last couple of years, as it allows students to study at home and in their own time. If you are interested in studying an online course, or would like to learn more about this method of study, take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of online education.

Also known as computer based training (CBT), distance learning, or e-learning, online training is a form of instruction that takes place completely on the internet. It involves a variety of multimedia elements, including graphics, audio, video, and web-links, which all can be accessed through one’s internet browser. These elements are used in lieu of traditional classroom components.

To use online training, users should have a basic knowledge of computers. This should include, but is not limited to, the ability to use a mouse, which involves knowing the difference between left-click and right-click; the ability to open and close documents and web pages; and the ability to navigate a website and web pages. Those with no computer experience at all, may have trouble using our online training and, for their own benefit, may want to enroll in a basic computer training class before using any of our online courses. Individual remote training

Our online training applications enable individuals to access and complete training material from any internet- enabled device, which means that employees with busy schedules are able to complete training in their own time and at their own pace, at work or from home. Learners can pause their training and get back to it later, while you monitor their progress

Online learning involves courses offered by postsecondary institutions that are 100% virtual, excluding massively open online courses. Online learning, or virtual classes offered over the internet, is contrasted with traditional courses taken in a brick-and-mortar school building.

Online training is generally self-paced and customizable to suit an individual’s specific learning needs. Therefore, online training can be conducted at almost any time and place, provided there is a computer with high-speed internet access. This makes this form of training convenient for the users, who can modify their training to fit into their day-to-day schedule.

Advanced computer users will be able to use our eLearning system to its full capacity.
